On January 23, 2017, at approximately 2139 hours, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a report of a traffic collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Merced Area Office responded to the scene to
investigate the collision.
It was determined that Michael Lindo was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on August Avenue at approximately 30 mph approximately 500 feet east of Palm Street in Delhi, CA. Mr. Lindo collided with a pedestrian whose location on the road is still under investigation. Mr. Lindo left the scene of the collision without providing aid to the pedestrian. Neighbors in the area of the collision administered CPR to the pedestrian while waiting for emergency medical responders. Sometime later, Mr. Lindo returned to the scene.
Despite the efforts of the neighbors and emergency medical responders, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the collision scene. The investigating officer determined that Mr. Lindo had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and he was subsequently arrested for several felony and misdemeanor charges. No other injuries were reported as result of this collision.

The CHP would like to remind pedestrians walking near or in the roadway to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Motorists and pedestrians each share the responsibility to ensure the safety of one another. Be aware and vigilant of pedestrians and vehicle traffic while traveling on roadways. Increase visibility at by carrying a flashlight if possible.
For motorist, be watchful for people walking and bicyclists, obey all speed limits and avoid distractions. Be prepared to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks (marked and unmarked). Slow down in areas where you are likely to find people walking, such as near bus stops, schools, and
playgrounds. If involved in a collision with a pedestrian, do the right thing, call for help and stay at the collision scene.
