Is There A Doctor in the House?
After I was born in 1951 at Modesto, Dad moved us to Los Banos in or about 1952 when he took a job with Anderson-Clayton as the manager of the cotton gin at Cotton Gin Road and South Mercey Springs, about 7 miles south of Los Banos. My first memory of a doctor dates back to around 1954 or ’55, when I developed asthma. The fact that living in a home or riding in a car where people smoked might cause “second hand ” related health problems had not yet been realized, and cigarette smoking was a cultural mainstream activity in those days. Back then, both of my parents smoked as did a majority of their friends and neighbors, and we never gave it a thought.
