On March 18 the Merced County Library, in conjunction with the Friends of the Los Banos Library, will present an orientation in Los Banos for persons interested in becoming volunteer adult literacy tutors.
The free orientation will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Los Banos branch of the county library, 1312 Seventh St., near Pacheco Boulevard.
The Tuesday evening orientation is open to everyone on the Westside of Merced County, including residents of Dos Palos, Gustine, Santa Nella, and Los Banos. Prospective tutors need to be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
Persons interested in participating should call the Los Banos library (826-5254) by March 15 to reserve a space. At least ten people need to reserve spaces to make it worthwhile for the library to send an orientation team from Merced.
Persons who attend the orientation are not obligated to become volunteer tutors. After the orientation, however, those who are interested in joining the program can sign up for the next tutor training workshop, which is scheduled in Merced on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Like the orientation, the training is free, including all instructional materials that are part of the program.
The tutor orientation will be directed by Pamela Cornelison, the Literacy Program Coordinator of the Merced County Library, as part of the library’s Read And Succeed program. Assisting Cornelison will be Diane Penders.
Included in the orientation will be a presentation of the duties of a tutor. There will also be ample opportunity for questions and answers.
“The orientation,” Cornelison said, “will be an opportunity to find out more about what an adult literacy tutor does.
