Circa 1899, 1903 and 1904, stewardship of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks was the responsibility of the Army stationed at Presidio San Francisco. The U.S Army regiment at Presidio assigned the task of patrolling the Parks to a group of about 500 African-American soldiers. Their job was to evict poachers, timber thieves, putting out fires real and otherwise. The Cheyenne and other Plain Indians who met these soldiers likened them to the buffalo because of their curly and matted hair that resembles the curly and matted hair between the horns of the buffalo, hence the name Buffalo Soldiers.
