Vehicles Hit With Rocks On Pacheco Pass

$

The following information was received on our Facebook page:

PLEASE SHARE, BE AWARE!

There was a man standing in the roadway on Pacheco Pass (Highway 152 east bound) THROWING LARGE ROCKS AT CARS. My husband saw him run towards our car from the shoulder and throw a rock at our car. It hit the window next to our sleeping four year old and shattered it covering him with glass.

We quickly pulled over realizing we weren’t the only ones attacked. We were the 7th car to pull over in a row of vehicles with their hazard lights on. Right away another car pulled in behind us with a missing windshield. A number of people were standing on the shoulder trying to call 911. Once we pulled over and checked on our son (STILL SLEEPING and fine thank the Lord) we saw the damage to our vehicle and then began to talk to others pulled over and the damage done to their cars was shocking.

A man was hit by a rock that came through his passenger side window, his pregnant wife was injured. The car behind us had a blown out tire. The car behind hers had a large rock in his back seat that came straight through his window and shattered glass all over his camping gear. And the car with the missing windshield had a newborn baby laying in a car seat covered in glass.

We weren’t very far from where the attacker was. I included a screen shot of a satellite picture of our location on the pass and circled the bridge that the CHP told us all of the rocks in the roadway were located. Many, many rocks were thrown. I’m sure there were more people hit.

I’m sharing this for a few reasons. One, so that all who travel that pass know what has taken place there and to be watchful for people on the road way. The man was small in frame. He had on tan shorts and a maroon or dark red shirt with white writing on it and a hat. He had a look on his face like he wanted to hurt us all out of anger. He was on the shoulder of the road running towards the cars throwing over hand. The CHP believe he may have gone under the bridge to flee. There was no sign of him. I saw the rock in the van’s back seat that landed on the man’s camping gear and it was about the size of a soft ball. It looked like the type of rocks that are found in that mountain range.

I’m also sharing this because we filed a police report and if anyone else was hit by rocks tonight (August 13 around 9:15 or so) and has damage to their vehicle they can call in and report it also so that the authorities can have record of that.

I hope this never happens to anyone else again but I want people to know of the potential threat on that roadway. It’s very isolated and reception is sketchy there.

Lastly, if you could share this I would feel so relieved to hear from others who were involved to know that they were ok.

The photos are of our van’s damage. The tempered glass kept most of the window in place but the inside of the window that shattered was all over our son and his car seat and the floor. The second picture is a screen shot of my map app and shows where we were on the pass. The next is a zoomed in version of that pic and on the last screen shot I circled the bridge that the rocks in the roadway were located where the man was attacking us all from.

On August 14, 2018, at approximately 1529 hours, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a call of a traffic collision on SR-33 south of Sanches Road. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Los Banos Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the collision.

During the course of the investigation it was determined a 71 year old male was driving a 2008 Ford northbound on SR-33 south of Sanches Road at an unknown speed. Mr. Voelker was driving a 2015 Peterbilt southbound on SR-33 south of Sanches Road at an approximate speed of 55 miles per hour. For an unknown reason, the male driver of the Ford allowed the Ford to cross over into the southbound lane of SR-33 directly in front of the Peterbilt. Unable to avoid a collision, the front of the Peterbilt collided with driver side of the Ford. As a result of the collision, the male driver of the Ford sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Ms. Jimenez was transported to Doctors Medical in Modesto by ambulance.

Alcohol and/or drugs, and weather conditions do not appear to have been a factor in this collision. This collision remains under investigation.

New Law Allows Consumers to Freeze Their Credit Report

$
0
0

Food experts don’t recommend it for your ground chuck or pork shoulder, but starting September 21, 2018, there’s something consumers can safely freeze, unfreeze, and then freeze again.

It’s their credit file.

Thanks to a new federal law – the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act – consumers will be able to contact each of the three major credit reporting agencies and direct them to place a free freeze on the consumer’s credit file. By restricting access, a credit freeze makes it harder for identity thieves to open new accounts in consumers’ names.

But once consumers have a freeze in place, what happens if they want to lift it so they can finance a purchase? That’s where another feature of the law comes in.

Not only will it be free for consumers to freeze their credit, but they can lift that freeze for free, too. And the law requires the credit reporting agencies to do it in a hurry. If a consumer asks for a freeze online or by phone, the credit reporting agency has to put the freeze in place no later than the next business day. If the consumer wants to lift the freeze – for example, to finance a new phone or fridge – that has to happen within an hour.

What does that mean for your business? Once freezes are free, it’s likely that more people interested in buying something from your business on credit will have freezes in place. The law streamlines the process for lifting those freezes, but there will be an initial adjustment period as consumers get used to the system of freezing, unfreezing, and refreezing their credit file. Under the new law, the FTC and the credit reporting agencies must set up webpages to make it easier for consumers to take advantage of their new rights. Those links will be in operation when the law takes effect.

Fresno CHP Auto Theft Task Force Makes Arrest

$

The Fresno Help Eliminate Auto Theft Task Force (Fresno H.E.A.T.) attempted to contact the driver of a stolen vehicle while it was stopped at a Chevron gas station at Belmont Avenue and Fowler Avenue. As several H.E.A.T. team members approached on foot, wearing clearly marked POLICE and SHERIFF vests, the male driver (Arellano) who was seated in drivers seat, saw them coming. H.E.A.T. team members identified themselves and ordered him out of the vehicle. Instead of surrendering, Arellano decided to flee. He accelerated forward and intentionally rammed a vehicle that was parked at the gas pumps in front of him. He backed up, then rammed the vehicle ahead of him a second time before rapidly accelerating away. He struck a fire hydrant and water main as he turned northbound on Fowler Avenue. Arrelano struck the raised center median Fowler Avenue, causing both right side tires of the stolen vehicle to go flat. Unmarked H.E.A.T. units followed at normal speeds until air unit CHP H40 arrived along with marked Fresno Police units. The stolen vehicle traversed numerous surface streets driving on two flat tires. He eventually entered northbound SR-41 from Divisidero Street. Arellano finally came to a stop in the center median of northbound SR-41 north of McKinley Avenue. Arellano surrendered without further incident. Arellano was suspected to under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest. A Drug Evaluation was completed and Arellano was booked into the Fresno County Jail on numerous charges.

Visalia Area CHP Reports Fatal Collision

On August 20, 2018, at approximately 1950 hours, the Fresno Communication Center (FCC) received a call of a solo vehicle traffic collision on SR-99 southbound south of just Avenue 76. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Visalia Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the collision.

During the course of the investigation it was determined the 34 year old female driver of a 2000 GMC Yukon was traveling on SR-99 southbound over Avenue 76, and ran off the road into the median for unknown reasons. The GMC struck a metal guardrail, overturned through the median, and came to rest on its roof blocking the number two lane of SR-99 northbound. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

There were four occupants in the GMC. The female driver was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest on the right shoulder of the freeway and succumbed to her injuries. There was a four month old female child in an improperly secured car seat. The child was removed from the vehicle without any visible injuries; however, the child was transported by Skylife helicopter to Kaweah Delta Medical Center as a precaution.

There were two adult male passengers with injuries transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center.
The northbound lanes of SR-99 were closed at Avenue 72 for safety due the lane blockage and to facilitate recovery of the vehicle. CalTrans responded to assist with traffic control and a short detour, with traffic re-entering SR-99 from Avenue 80.

Alcohol and/or drugs is not believed to be a factor, but the investigation is ongoing.

Upon arrival of the officers, it was found that the driver of the Nissan was traveling eastbound on Henry Miller Road west of Delta Road at an undetermined speed. Mr. Diaz was driving an International big rig pulling an empty tank trailer, westbound Henry Miller Avenue west of Delta Road at 55 mph. For an undetermined reason, the driver of the Nissan allowed her vehicle to travel off the south road edge of Henry Miller road. She then corrected her turning movement causing the Nissan to travel across the eastbound lane and into the westbound lane of Henry Miller Road directly in front of the rear axle of Mr. Diaz’s trailer. The right side of the Nissan collided with the rear axle of the trailer, causing the Nissan to be ripped in half. The Nissan then came to rest on its wheels on the north dirt shoulder of Henry Miller Road, facing east. Mr. Diaz stopped his vehicle on the north dirt shoulder of Henry Miller Road, facing west. The driver of the Nissan was transported by ground ambulance to Los Banos Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Mr. Diaz sustained no injuries due to this collision. Henry Miller Road was shut down for approximately 45 minutes as traffic was diverted around the scene.

It is unknown at this time whether drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in this collision.
