There was a man standing in the roadway on Pacheco Pass (Highway 152 east bound) THROWING LARGE ROCKS AT CARS. My husband saw him run towards our car from the shoulder and throw a rock at our car. It hit the window next to our sleeping four year old and shattered it covering him with glass.![]()
We quickly pulled over realizing we weren’t the only ones attacked. We were the 7th car to pull over in a row of vehicles with their hazard lights on. Right away another car pulled in behind us with a missing windshield. A number of people were standing on the shoulder trying to call 911. Once we pulled over and checked on our son (STILL SLEEPING and fine thank the Lord) we saw the damage to our vehicle and then began to talk to others pulled over and the damage done to their cars was shocking.![]()
A man was hit by a rock that came through his passenger side window, his pregnant wife was injured. The car behind us had a blown out tire. The car behind hers had a large rock in his back seat that came straight through his window and shattered glass all over his camping gear. And the car with the missing windshield had a newborn baby laying in a car seat covered in glass.![]()
We weren’t very far from where the attacker was. I included a screen shot of a satellite picture of our location on the pass and circled the bridge that the CHP told us all of the rocks in the roadway were located. Many, many rocks were thrown. I’m sure there were more people hit.
I’m sharing this for a few reasons. One, so that all who travel that pass know what has taken place there and to be watchful for people on the road way. The man was small in frame. He had on tan shorts and a maroon or dark red shirt with white writing on it and a hat. He had a look on his face like he wanted to hurt us all out of anger. He was on the shoulder of the road running towards the cars throwing over hand. The CHP believe he may have gone under the bridge to flee. There was no sign of him. I saw the rock in the van’s back seat that landed on the man’s camping gear and it was about the size of a soft ball. It looked like the type of rocks that are found in that mountain range.
I’m also sharing this because we filed a police report and if anyone else was hit by rocks tonight (August 13 around 9:15 or so) and has damage to their vehicle they can call in and report it also so that the authorities can have record of that.
I hope this never happens to anyone else again but I want people to know of the potential threat on that roadway. It’s very isolated and reception is sketchy there.
Lastly, if you could share this I would feel so relieved to hear from others who were involved to know that they were ok.
The photos are of our van’s damage. The tempered glass kept most of the window in place but the inside of the window that shattered was all over our son and his car seat and the floor. The second picture is a screen shot of my map app and shows where we were on the pass. The next is a zoomed in version of that pic and on the last screen shot I circled the bridge that the rocks in the roadway were located where the man was attacking us all from.
