In Loving Memory: Sherry Lynn Valentine
Sherry was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 5, 1946. She was given the name and address of her future husband, Jim by a mutual friend while he was serving in the Navy on his third deployment to Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ticonderoga. Nine months of letter writing ensued and apparently both were pretty good communicators because they finally met in person upon Jim’s return from overseas in October 1969. They were engaged 3 months later and soon after Jim’s discharge from active duty (April 1970) they were married on June 6, 1970.
Sherry became very active in local activities most involving St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was a charter member of the James V. Pernetti Unit 166 American Legion Auxiliary. Her time was spent with the Los Banos Genealogical Society, Young Ladies Institute, St. Joseph’s Altar Society, and St. Joseph’s Choir. She served on several church committees and enjoyed participation in church prayer and bible study groups.
Sherry was a dance instructor with Rose Marie Dance Studio for over 20 years. She was also a teacher at the Merced County (Los Banos) Child Development Center for many years until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her father Arthur A. Harper Sr., step father Raymond Treval and mother Alberta Treval and several nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Valentine of Los Banos, daughter Kathy Valentine of Santa Cruz, brother Arthur Harper Jr. of Walton, Nebraska, sisters; Charlene (Kenneth) Boone of Garden Grove and Rae Cortez of Mission Hills.
A visitation will be held on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 10 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 11 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by The Funeral Mass at 11:30 am. Burial at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at 1:30 pm. VISALIA AREA SCHOOL ZONE ENFORCEMENT OPERATIONS YIELD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
In an effort to save lives, the California Highway Patrol conducted a series of successful
Enhanced Enforcement Operations focusing on School Zones.
Visalia, Calif. – As part of ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently conducted a series of school zone enforcement operations focusing on motorists and pedestrians that failed to yield the right-of-way or who take unsafe and illegal actions.
Pedestrian safety is a key issue in our community, and the CHP is committed to upholding pedestrian safety laws to protect the members of our community.
On various dates throughout the month, a school zone enforcement operation was conducted near Sierra View Academy focusing on drivers and pedestrians who were violating right-of-way laws. As a result of this effort, 12 citations were issued, 3 warnings were issued, 1 vehicle was impounded, and an untold number of people were educated on the importance of pedestrian safety.
The CHP strongly encourages members of the community to follow basic safe practices:
- Drivers should slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits, both in school zones and in neighborhoods surrounding the school.
- Comply with local school drop-off and pick-up procedures for the safety of all children accessing the school.
- Avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks to let children out of the car. Double parking will block visibility for other children and motorists. Visibility is further reduced during the rain and fog when condensation forms on car windows.
- Watch for children walking or biking to school when backing up (out of a driveway or leaving a garage).
- Watch for children walking or bicycling (both on the road and the sidewalk) in areas near a school.
- Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops. Watch for children arriving late for the bus, who may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
- Pedestrians should look both ways for traffic before crossing, make eye contact with the driver, and make certain cars are yielding before crossing. Having the right-of-way does not prevent you from being seriously injured by a driver who is not paying attention. Remember, pedestrians don’t have armor!
The CHP is committed to doing our part to keep the community safe. We urge every member of the community to be safe and follow the rules of the road. Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility. For additional information, please contact the CHP Visalia Area Public Information Officer Steve Beal at (559)734-6767.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On September 28, 2018, at approximately 1744 hours, the Merced County Communications Center received a call of solo traffic collision. Officers from the California Highway Patrol Merced Area Office were dispatched to the scene to perform an accident investigation.

The driver, who was unrestrained, was fully ejected and sustained fatal injuries. Dallas Wheat was restrained in the right front seat of the Ford and sustained moderate injuries in the collision. Mr. Wheat was air lifted to Memorial Hospital in Modesto. The cause of the investigation in under investigation.
